To build something directly on to the world (ex.: buldings, traps) you need a construction bench or an advanced construction bench. Construction benches and advanced construction benches do provide a gravity-free environment. Layers can only be used with an advanced construction bench.

Older Versions[]
To construct in previous version, you had to press Space to go into construction mode and it would freeze your screen and turn it into a gravity-free, layered environment.
